Trump Honors 16-Year-Old Lifeguard Ryder Williams After Dramatic California Rescue

President Donald Trump hosted 16-year-old lifeguard Ryder Williams and 10-year-old Nathaniel Rai at the White House on Monday, weeks after Williams became widely recognized for rescuing the boy from powerful surf along the California coast.

The meeting in the Oval Office followed the circulation of dramatic video showing Williams battling large waves as he held onto Rai after the child was swept away from shore at Seabright State Beach in Santa Cruz.

Trump praised Williams during the gathering, describing the teenager as a hero and acknowledging the extraordinary danger involved in attempting the rescue under difficult ocean conditions.

“He’s a real hero,” Trump said while speaking to Rai, before adding with a joking tone that he was not sure he would have attempted the same rescue himself and telling the boy that he was fortunate Trump had not been the lifeguard on duty that day.

The rescue occurred on July 25, when Rai was pulled roughly 15 yards offshore by powerful waves and strong currents, leaving the 10-year-old in immediate danger as conditions made it difficult to reach him safely.

Williams, who was a rookie lifeguard with California State Parks at the time, entered the rough water and managed to maintain a firm grip on Rai while the two were repeatedly hit and submerged by waves during the rescue.

The teenager remained with the boy for more than two minutes before fellow lifeguard Aaron Bohnen reached them with a rescue tube and helped bring Rai back toward the beach, where emergency care was provided.

Video recorded during the incident showed the pair repeatedly disappearing beneath the waves before becoming visible again as the surf moved back, creating footage that quickly spread across social media and drew widespread attention.

The rescue was particularly notable because Williams had already responded to several emergencies during the same shift, with accounts indicating that the incident involving Rai was one of five ocean rescues he carried out that day.

Rai later appeared at the White House alongside his father, Sumit Rai, while Williams sat across from the family and the president during the Oval Office meeting arranged to recognize the teenager's actions.

Sumit Rai expressed deep gratitude toward Williams, saying the lifeguard's intervention had made an immeasurable difference for his family after his son came dangerously close to drowning in the surf.

Williams has credited his California State Parks training rather than personal heroism for his response, emphasizing that his goal is to continue helping people and pursue further training with plans to attend paramedic school and eventually become a firefighter.

Trump became aware of the rescue after his son, Eric Trump, shared footage of the incident online and argued that Williams deserved the highest civilian recognition for his actions during the dangerous rescue.

The president subsequently said Williams should receive a civilian honor and invited the teenager and the rescued child to the White House, turning the viral California rescue into a nationally recognized story.

The White House appearance also came as California lawmakers were considering whether lifeguards should formally receive first-responder status, an issue that has gained renewed attention because of the risks involved in ocean rescue work.

Supporters of the designation argue that formally recognizing lifeguards as first responders could improve professional recognition, resources, worker protections and benefits, while some officials have raised questions about what training standards and funding requirements such a designation would involve.

Santa Cruz state Sen. John Laird said the issue was more complicated than simply assigning the title, pointing to questions surrounding appropriate training, official designation procedures and responsibility for the costs associated with expanded first-responder requirements.

For Williams, however, the White House recognition followed an incident that began as a dangerous rescue on a California beach and ended with the teenager receiving national attention for remaining focused under conditions that could have placed his own life at risk.

Trump's meeting with Williams and Rai ultimately brought the young lifeguard's actions into the Oval Office, where the president publicly praised his courage while the boy he rescued sat nearby with his family.
