Paul Pelosi, the husband of former U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, was involved in a traffic incident in California's Napa Valley region that could result in misdemeanor charges, according to local law enforcement officials.
The incident occurred Friday in Yountville, a small town in Napa County known for its vineyards and tourism industry. Authorities said that the 86-year-old Pelosi was driving a convertible vehicle when it collided with a legally parked car, causing significant damage. Investigators stated that Pelosi briefly stopped after the collision but then drove away from the scene.
A witness who reportedly observed the incident contacted emergency services, leading sheriff's deputies to locate Pelosi a short distance away. Officials said his vehicle had sustained substantial front-end damage.
According to the Napa County Sheriff's Office, no injuries were reported as a result of the crash. Authorities also confirmed that Pelosi showed no signs of alcohol consumption, and tests conducted at the scene did not indicate impairment.
During the investigation, Pelosi reportedly told deputies that he was aware he had struck something but was uncertain about exactly what had happened or when the damage to his vehicle had occurred.
Because the incident did not involve injuries, law enforcement officials said they are recommending that prosecutors consider a misdemeanor charge related to leaving the scene of a property-damage accident. No arrest was made at the scene.
In addition, the sheriff's office has referred Pelosi to the California Department of Motor Vehicles for a standard evaluation process commonly used to determine whether elderly drivers remain medically fit to operate a vehicle safely.
A spokesperson for the Pelosi family released a statement saying that Paul Pelosi had personally apologized to the owner of the damaged vehicle and had committed to taking full responsibility for the costs associated with the accident. The spokesperson added that the family would not provide further public comments regarding the matter.
The incident has drawn additional public attention because of Pelosi's previous legal issues involving driving offenses. In 2022, he pleaded guilty to misdemeanor driving under the influence charges following a separate traffic collision in Napa County. As part of that case, he received probation, completed court-ordered programs, and paid financial penalties and restitution.
Paul Pelosi also received widespread public attention after he was seriously injured during an attack at the Pelosi family residence in San Francisco in 2022. The individual convicted in that case was later sentenced to a lengthy prison term.
Authorities have not announced when a final decision regarding potential charges in the current incident will be made.
