Escalating tensions between the United States and Iran entered a new phase after President Donald Trump confirmed that American forces carried out another round of military strikes against Iranian targets. According to Trump, the operation was conducted in response to the recent deaths of three American service members during attacks linked to Iran-backed forces.
US Central Command announced that the overnight operation marked the ninth consecutive night of military action. Officials said the strikes focused on military infrastructure and communication facilities that Washington believes have been used to support attacks against commercial shipping in the Strait of Hormuz.
Residents in several Iranian cities reported hearing explosions, while Iranian media said multiple locations across the country were affected. The reports identified cities including Tabriz, Chabahar, Konarak, Bandar Mahshahr, and Bandar Imam Khomeini as areas impacted during the operation.
Iran responded by announcing military action against what it described as American targets in neighboring Syria. Iranian officials also claimed that US aircraft near Jordan's Aqaba Airport were targeted as part of what they called a surprise retaliation. Meanwhile, Kuwaiti authorities said their armed forces intercepted several drones believed to have originated from Iran.
Adding to concerns over regional security, Iranian media reported explosions involving two oil tankers attempting to pass through the Strait of Hormuz. The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed the vessels were using an unsafe southern route through the strategic waterway. US officials have disputed that account.
The IRGC warned that the Strait of Hormuz would remain unsafe for oil and petrochemical shipments while American military operations continue. The organization also threatened further retaliatory action if additional strikes are carried out.
The latest escalation follows the deaths of three US service members over the past several days. One American soldier was killed during an attack in northern Iraq, while two others lost their lives after an earlier strike on a military base in Jordan. US officials have also reported that unidentified human remains were recovered following the Jordan attack, with identification efforts still underway.
Despite the ongoing military confrontation, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said Washington remains willing to pursue a diplomatic solution. He also emphasized that freedom of navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is a matter of international importance, arguing that no country should be able to use one of the world's busiest energy shipping routes as political leverage.
The renewed violence comes after previous efforts to reduce hostilities failed to produce lasting results. A preliminary agreement reached in June gradually collapsed, and negotiations aimed at securing a longer-term settlement have shown little progress.
With both sides exchanging military actions and issuing new warnings, concerns continue to grow over the possibility of a wider regional conflict that could affect global energy markets and international security.
