Facebook and Messenger Suffer Major Global Outage as Meta Works to Restore Services

Millions of users around the world experienced significant disruptions on Facebook and Facebook Messenger on Friday, June 12, 2026, after a major outage affected Meta's platforms for several hours.

According to data from outage-tracking service Downdetector, reports of problems began rising sharply shortly after 9:00 a.m. Eastern Time, with more than 120,000 users reporting issues at the peak of the disruption. The outage affected users across multiple countries, making it one of the largest Facebook service interruptions reported this year.

Many users said they were unexpectedly logged out of their accounts and were unable to sign back in. Others reported seeing error messages such as "Query Error" or "Something Went Wrong" when attempting to access Facebook or Messenger. In some cases, users encountered blank news feeds, missing content, or failed page loads.

The disruption impacted both mobile applications and desktop versions of Facebook. Business users also reported difficulties accessing Facebook Ads Manager and other Meta-related services used for advertising and marketing operations.

As reports spread across social media platforms, thousands of users questioned whether their accounts had been hacked or suspended before realizing the issue was part of a wider global outage. Discussions quickly appeared on X, Reddit, and other online communities as users searched for information about the unexpected service interruption.

Meta spokesperson Andy Stone acknowledged the problem on X, stating that the company was aware that some users were experiencing difficulties accessing its services. He confirmed that Meta's technical teams were actively working to identify and resolve the issue.

Later in the day, Stone provided an update indicating that services were gradually returning online, although some features could continue experiencing delays or temporary instability while systems fully recovered.

Data collected during the outage showed that most complaints were related to Facebook's mobile application, while a large number of users also reported login failures and website access problems. Reports originated from numerous countries, highlighting the global nature of the disruption.

While Facebook and Messenger were the primary platforms affected, reports regarding other Meta-owned services such as Instagram and WhatsApp appeared to be far less widespread. However, some users did experience temporary issues across multiple Meta services during the outage period.

By late morning in the United States, recovery efforts appeared to be making progress as user reports began declining. Nevertheless, some users continued to encounter slow loading times, delayed notifications, missing comments, and occasional login problems while Meta worked to fully stabilize its infrastructure.

Meta has not yet released a detailed explanation regarding the cause of the outage. The company is expected to provide additional information once technical investigations are completed.

The incident once again highlighted the enormous reliance of millions of users, businesses, advertisers, and content creators on Meta's ecosystem, with even a short disruption causing widespread impact across communication, marketing, and social networking activities worldwide.
