Darline Graham officially took the oath of office on Tuesday, becoming South Carolina's newest U.S. senator after the passing of her brother, longtime Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham. She will temporarily represent the state until the current Senate term concludes in January.
The appointment came just days after Lindsey Graham died unexpectedly at the age of 71 following what officials described as a brief illness. Preliminary medical findings indicated that he suffered an aortic dissection linked to an underlying heart condition.
Speaking shortly after her appointment was announced, Darline Graham said she considers the role both an honor and a responsibility. She explained that her brother had always supported and protected her throughout her life, adding that she hopes to continue the work he began in the Senate.
South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster selected Darline Graham to fill the vacancy after receiving support from President Donald Trump, who publicly praised the decision and described it as a meaningful way to honor the late senator's legacy.
Although Darline Graham has never served in elected office, she is no stranger to public service. Her professional career has focused on advocating for people with disabilities in South Carolina. She previously worked as communications director for the South Carolina Vocational Rehabilitation Department and has served as commissioner of the South Carolina Commission for the Blind since 2019.
Her appointment follows a remarkable family story. After the death of their mother from cancer and the loss of their father to a heart attack just over a year later, Lindsey Graham assumed responsibility for raising his younger sister while completing his education. He later became her legal guardian and officially adopted her, ensuring she would receive military benefits during his service in the U.S. Air Force.
Throughout his political career, Darline Graham remained one of Lindsey Graham's strongest supporters. She frequently appeared in campaign advertisements, attended major political events with him, and publicly spoke about the important role he played in her life after their parents' deaths.
Before his passing, Lindsey Graham had secured the Republican nomination for another Senate campaign and was preparing to compete in the upcoming general election. A special Republican election will now determine the party's nominee for the seat. It remains unclear whether Darline Graham plans to enter that race and seek a full six-year term in the Senate.
For now, she will represent South Carolina in Washington while lawmakers and voters prepare for the next phase of the state's political transition.
