A dramatic roof collapse inside a BJ's Wholesale Club in Ocean Township, New Jersey, sent shoppers rushing for safety after intense flooding overwhelmed part of the building during severe storms on Monday morning.

The incident occurred at approximately 11:30 a.m. at the retailer's Oakhurst location as powerful rainfall swept across Monmouth County. Surveillance footage circulating online captured the moment a section of the ceiling suddenly gave way, allowing a massive surge of water to pour into the store.

Video from inside the warehouse shows shoppers near the bakery department scrambling to escape as water rushed across the floor, pushing display tables and merchandise through the aisles. The collapse happened after rainwater accumulated on the roof during the storm, though investigators have not yet confirmed the official cause.

Authorities said about 27 people were inside the building when the incident occurred. Initial emergency calls suggested that several people could be trapped beneath the damaged roof, prompting officials to activate a large-scale emergency response.

Police, firefighters, emergency medical teams, and urban search and rescue crews quickly arrived at the scene. Rescue specialists entered the building with search dogs and drones to carefully inspect the damaged structure and ensure that everyone had safely evacuated.

Officials later confirmed that every person inside the warehouse was accounted for.

According to local authorities, two individuals were briefly trapped by debris but managed to free themselves before emergency crews completed their search. No serious injuries or fatalities were reported.

Following the collapse, the store was evacuated and closed while structural engineers began assessing the damage. Investigators are now working to determine exactly what caused the roof to fail.

Emergency officials said the event highlights how rapidly severe weather can create dangerous situations, especially during periods of flash flooding. Heavy rainfall across parts of New Jersey flooded roads, stranded vehicles, and prompted multiple emergency responses throughout the region.

Images from the scene showed standing water surrounding nearby roads and parking areas, while cleanup efforts continued after the storms moved through.

Although the structural damage inside the BJ's warehouse was significant, officials described the outcome as remarkable given the number of people inside the building at the time. The successful evacuation and rapid emergency response helped prevent what could have become a far more serious disaster.

The investigation into the roof collapse remains ongoing, and additional findings are expected once structural inspections are completed.
