PSG Edge Arsenal in Dramatic Penalty Shootout to Retain Champions League Crown

Paris Saint-Germain successfully defended their UEFA Champions League title after defeating Arsenal 4-3 on penalties following a tense 1-1 draw after extra time in Budapest.

The final at the Puskás Aréna delivered everything football fans could ask for — an early breakthrough, controversial moments, intense pressure, extra-time drama, and heartbreaking penalties.

Arsenal made the perfect start when Kai Havertz found the net just six minutes into the match. A defensive mistake from PSG allowed the German forward to break through on goal before calmly finishing past goalkeeper Matvei Safonov. The early strike sent Arsenal supporters into celebration and gave Mikel Arteta’s side hope of winning the club’s first-ever Champions League trophy.

Despite falling behind, PSG gradually took control of possession and pushed Arsenal deep into their own half for long periods. However, Arsenal’s defense remained organized throughout the first half, limiting clear opportunities for the French champions.

The momentum shifted after halftime as PSG increased the pressure. Their breakthrough eventually arrived in the 65th minute when Ousmane Dembélé converted a penalty after a foul inside the box. The decision sparked debate among Arsenal fans and players, but VAR allowed the goal to stand.

With the score tied 1-1, both teams searched for a winner during regulation time and extra time. PSG looked dangerous through Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Vitinha, while Arsenal nearly stole victory in the final seconds when Viktor Gyokeres saw a late effort deflected narrowly wide.

The match ultimately went to penalties.

PSG held their nerve during the shootout, while Arsenal missed crucial attempts. Eberechi Eze failed to convert early in the sequence, and after several successful penalties from both sides, Gabriel’s final kick sailed over the crossbar, sealing PSG’s victory and crushing Arsenal’s European dream once again.

The win marked another historic achievement for Luis Enrique and his squad. PSG became the first French club ever to win back-to-back Champions League titles and only the second team in the modern era to successfully defend the trophy after Real Madrid’s dominant run between 2016 and 2018.

Luis Enrique also secured his third Champions League title as a manager, further strengthening his legacy among Europe’s elite coaches.

For Arsenal, the defeat was devastating but also showed how far the club has progressed under Arteta. The London side pushed one of Europe’s strongest teams to the limit and produced one of their best Champions League campaigns in years.

Kai Havertz’s goal also placed him in Champions League history, becoming one of the few players to score in finals for two different English clubs after previously scoring for Chelsea in the competition.

While PSG celebrated another European triumph, Arsenal supporters were left wondering how much longer the wait for their first Champions League trophy will continue.
