The Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool has once again become the center of national attention after new maintenance problems appeared only days after a major renovation project was completed. President Donald Trump announced that repairs would begin immediately, saying the landmark had been damaged by vandals and promising that those responsible would face serious legal consequences.
The Reflecting Pool, one of Washington, D.C.'s most recognizable landmarks, recently underwent an extensive renovation as part of preparations for the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations. The project included removing algae, repainting the pool's concrete surface with a bright blue coating, and installing new technology designed to keep the water cleaner for years to come.
However, shortly after the renovation was finished, the project encountered unexpected setbacks. The water gradually turned green again due to algae growth, while sections of the newly applied blue coating reportedly began peeling from the bottom of the pool.
Following an inspection of the site, President Trump stated that the damage appeared to be the result of deliberate vandalism rather than normal wear. In several public statements, he claimed that a long cut had been made across part of the renovated surface and alleged that chemicals may have been introduced into the water, although authorities have not publicly confirmed those claims.
Federal officials have launched an investigation into the reported damage. Trump also warned that anyone found responsible for vandalizing national monuments could face severe criminal penalties under federal law.
The renovation project has attracted attention not only because of the technical issues but also because of its growing cost. While early estimates suggested the work would cost less than $2 million, federal records later indicated that the total cost exceeded $16 million after additional improvements and water treatment systems were added.
The Department of the Interior hired contractors to repaint the pool and install a nanobubble water treatment system intended to reduce algae naturally. Officials initially reported that the new technology had successfully cleared the water, but the algae returned within days, forcing maintenance crews to use additional cleaning methods.
Because of the new damage, officials are expected to drain parts of the Reflecting Pool again so repairs can be completed before upcoming national events connected to America's semiquincentennial celebration.
The controversy has also become linked to a separate investigation involving markings that recently appeared on the National Mall displaying the numbers "86 47." Some officials are examining whether there is any connection between the two incidents, although investigators have not announced any conclusions.
Meanwhile, U.S. Park Police confirmed that multiple individuals were taken into custody or cited in connection with activity around the Reflecting Pool. Authorities have not released complete details about every case, and investigations remain ongoing.
One of those detained told reporters he had simply touched a loose section of the peeling blue coating while passing through the area during a bicycle ride. His case is expected to proceed through the court system.
As repair crews prepare to return, the Reflecting Pool remains one of the most closely watched restoration projects in Washington. Officials hope the landmark will be fully restored ahead of the nation's historic anniversary celebrations while investigators continue examining the reported vandalism and construction issues.
